Progress on the Comic Book Version of "The Mimes of Palopan"
In 2025, I took a class in comic book making on the ELVTR on-line learning platform. My teacher was the insightful, informative, and accessible artist Tom Feister. An Eisner Award winner, Tom took the class through the comic book making hats of penciller, inker, colorist, letterer, and even editor. Professionals of each of these roles guest lectured our class. Tom is a compelling composer of splash pages and sequential art. Using class instruction, critiques ,and studying the drawings of guidepost artists such as Steve Rude and Andrew Loomis, I am endeavoring to produce a comic book of the play.
My art-making process is traditional . First pencil drawing , then ink, erase remaining pencil, and finish with watercolor. ZIG brand white-out paint used for corrections. Pages are usually 10 x 15 inch drawings on 11 x 17 inch Canson Comic Book Bristol paper.
The comic book contains one scene that is not in the play. That scene is where Jackson has a dream of he and his spouse, Lee Krasner together at a beach town.
Here is a cover page and that three page scene:
